Desk Manual on Mental Illness for LAP Directors

Acknowledgement

LPAC is a Conference of the Canadian Bar Association and this project was funded by the Canadian Bar Insurance Association, providing essential insurance coverage for Canadian lawyers, by Lawyers, for Lawyers. We hope this Manual will help serve the needs of the directors, staff, and peer volunteers of assistance programs for law students, lawyers and judges, as well as for practicing members of our profession. In preparing these materials, we have relied heavily on resources provided by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto, Canada and by the Canadian Mental Health Association in Ottawa, Canada.

Together, we make a difference!

Introduction

The Public Health Agency of Canada's website is an excellent single source on the web that has links to dozens of useful sites for mental health groups, associations and organizations. The network is maintained by Health Canada and major mental health organizations have contributed to designing this portion of the site. Go to the home page and under Topics, click on mental health. The site includes mental health listings for specific groups such as seniors, women, ethnic communities and people with disabilities, on a province by province basis. The Canadian Mental Health Association provides information, contacts and reference information for other helping organizations. The CMHA has 135 branches across canada and you can find local contact information in your telephone book.
